Procrastination is the thief of time” [Edward Young The Complaint: Night Thoughts]

“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today” [Lord Chesterfield letter to his son]

Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday” [Don Marquis archy and mehitabel]

For us to be really successful in anything in life, we first have to understand that you are you can NOT wait for success to be given to you. Success is EARNED on a daily basis. You’re not going to win every battle, but WE EXPECT TO WIN THE WAR!

Have a look around. Successful people in fitness have got that way because they don’t put it off till tomorrow. They put the work in today and everyday. The only person that is responsible for your success is YOU! There are some interesting facts about procrastination that I’d like you to consider.

Did you know:

25% of people identify themselves as chronic procrastinators. For them procrastination is a lifestyle, albeit a maladaptive one. It cuts across all areas of their life. They don’t pay their bills on time, They miss opportunities for buying tickets to concerts. They don’t cash gift certificates or checks. they file income tax returns late, they leave their Christmas shopping until Christmas eve, and/or they put off fitness training and healthy eating habits, because they are going to do it tomorrow.picture image of a procrastination motivational quote

It’s not trivial type thing, although as a culture, especially in the USA they don’t take it seriously as a problem. It represents a profound problem of self regulation. Unfortunately, there may be more of it in the U.S. than in other countries because most Americans don’t call people on their excuses! They let them get away with way to much Bulls**t.

Procrastinators are made not born. Procrastination is a learned thing, but not directly. If someone has had a very authoritarian parent, this could have a definite effect on the development of procrastination. Having a harsh, controlling father keeps children from developing the ability to regulate themselves.

Procrastination can even be a form of rebellion. Under these household conditions and acting in rebellion, the procrastinator will turn more to friends than to parents for support. These friends may reinforce procrastination because they tend to be more tolerant of their excuses. Procrastinators are not different in their ability to estimate time, although they tend to be more optimistic than other people.

Procrastinators also tend to use higher levels of alcohol among those people who drink. Procrastinators drink more than they intend to—a manifestation of generalized problems in self-regulation. Procrastinators tell themselves lies like, “I’ll feel more like doing this tomorrow.” Or “I work best under pressure.” But in fact they do not get the urge the next day or work best under pressure.

In addition, they protect their sense of self by saying “this isn’t important.” If you think that your general health, fitness and longevity isn’t important, then there isn’t much we can do here at fitnesshealthandmind to help you reach your goals. You’ve got to first of all say “ this is important enough”!

Another big illusion procrastinators indulge is that the pressure of time makes them more creative. Unfortunately they do not turn out to be more creative; they only feel that way. They squander their resources and opportunities cause they’re ALWAYS PUTTING IT OFF! Opportunities are exactly what they imply.

A current opportunity is a place in time were you either go RIGHT or LEFT. It’s a fork in the road. Only you can decide your future, cause everyone else is worrying about their OWN FUTURE.

Procrastinators also actively look for distractions, particularly ones that don’t take a lot of commitment on their part. Checking e-mail is almost perfect for this purpose. They distract themselves as a way of regulating their emotions such as a fear of failure.

There are a few different types of procrastinators. Do any of the descriptions below hit a tender note?

Avoiders: They are avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability.

Arousal types: or thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush.

Decisional procrastinators: who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events.

There are big costs to procrastination, and HEALTH is one. Putting off changing the way you eat and what you are eating by putting it off, has long term detrimental effects on your general health, your immune system, they’re more incidences of gastrointestinal problems and more concerns about sleeplessness or insomnia.

In addition, procrastination has a high cost to others as well as oneself; it shifts the burden of responsibilities onto others, who become resentful. Procrastination also destroys teamwork in the workplace and private relationships.

The only way that I know of as a Personal Trainer to cure the detrimental effects of procrastination, is to MAKE THE DECISION TO DO SOMETHING. WRITE IT DOWN AND START CROSSING OFF EACH STEP ALONG THE WAY. NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, TAKE STEPS EVERYDAY TOWARD YOUR GOAL.

Even if they may be small steps, DON’T PUT IT OFF. DO THINGS TODAY! NO EXCUSES!!!
